Essential Reading and Writing Skills for College Success

Research indicates the two academic skills necessary for college achievement is the ability to read and write well. In this one-time class, college -bound students will learn how to tackle large volumes of college reading and how to write college level papers. 

In this class the instructor will guide learners in the process of how to approach the college reading, writing and studying process. Students learn reading, writing, vocabulary and study strategies to prepare them for success in higher level university classes. 

The following topics will be covered:

•	How to approach reading a textbook such that you retain the information.

•	How to write a college research paper and what is the essential first step in writing. 

•	How to handle large volumes of difficult reading especially when one does not understand the content of the material.

•	How to engender a good attitude towards learning when you have not been successful in the past.

•	How to prepare for essay exams and the difference between them and multiple choice exams as far as study preparation is concerned.

•	How to take notes in different subjects and when to employ different methods.

•	How to manage your time and create a study plan before the first day of classes. 

•	How to memorize information effortlessly and how to create a means for recalling needed information for a test. 

•	How to choose the right classes so you are not overwhelmed your first year of college.

This lively presentation will prepare students for long-term college success. Much of the material in this class is taken from Professor Cheryl Carter’s curriculum book, “Get Good Grades in College”  

The class will be conducted in a lively way with supplemental videos, worksheets and teacher-made checklists. 

Week 1:
Reading: How to read textbooks and other difficult college material. Learn the techniques of reading a large volume of university/ college academic work

Week 2:
Writing: How to write essays that your professor will love. How to approach essay writing. 

Week 3:
College vocabulary words all students should know and understanding the Greek and Latin roots of words.

Week 4
Study Strategies all college students should know, integrating reading, writing, vocabulary and study skills.

Learning Goals

Learners will gain valuable and long-term  college reading, writing and study skills.

Carter is a busy homeschooling mother (of five), author, speaker and a college professor with a passion to help others. Besides teaching, she has written broadly on spiritual growth, education, and special needs She is the author of several books including Organize Your Life, Essential Writing Skills for the College Bound Student, Inspire the Writer in Your Child and Organize Your AD/HD Child.  In addition to writing fiction and poetry in her spare time, she blogs regularly on issues of clarity in written communication, college admissions and the  family.  She has a BA in English, a MFA in Writing and has done graduate study in Special Education and College Admission. Active in her local homeschool group, she has taught college-prep coop classes for several years. She has also written numerous literary guides and won academic awards for her writing. Her books have been translated into Japanese, Hebrew, German, Czech and Polish. Carter's curriculum and writing classes focus on equipping students with the vital skills for lifetime communication success. Her curriculum and classes are marked by a sense of depth, yet simplicity that nurture a love of writing in students.
