Young Adult Fiction Workshop A place for serious teen writers to connect with other writers while developing their writing skills. Young writers will share their novels, stories, plays, and other creations with other aspiring authors, and receive relevant guidance in the form of instruction on plot, character development, theme, world building and various other creative writing skills. Members of this serious writing club have won prestigious national writing awards/contests. (See recent list below). Learners will also receive relevant guidance, and needed instruction, on character development, world building, chosen point of view, avoiding plot holes, etc. This club is a casual approach to the serious muse of writing. Learners will not be graded on their writing; however, they will be encouraged to revise their writing such that it is publishable or polished. Learners will receive guidance and step-by-step publishing advice, once their novels, short stories, etc. are completed. Some learners have also received book contracts as a result of polishing their novels/ stories in our interactive community. This club is an encouraging and nonthreatening place where writers develop their skills at their own pace. You do not have to be a polished writer to join. In fact, developing writers (even struggling) are welcome and encouraged to join the Young Author Writing Club as long as they have a desire to write. Connecting with other writers is also an important aspect of this club where the community of creatives is stressed. Special needs learners are welcome in our encouraging club. In fact, some of our best young authors have been neuro-diverse writers. This club is lead by an author-teacher who instructs learners from the perspective of a writer and an author. Besides being a multi-published author, who has taught creative writing to college students. She is also a writing coach. Cohort/Club participants often remark how much they appreciate the advice of an experienced author. Ms., Cheryl, the leader author-teacher, is patient, yet encouraging and she collaborates along with other assistant teachers (also professional writers) to ensure young authors get adequate feedback on their writing projects. She also infuses the classes with humor. In the last year, this class (and our Young Author Creative Writing Club) has been credited with the following achievements: • An American Voice finalist for Writing • Two Beta state Writing Awards • A book contract with a traditional publisher. • Scholastic Writing Award finalists • Davis Young Scholars for the Gifted (for Creative Writing) • Six local school writing awards • Anthology story inclusion • Flash Fiction Contest winner • Self-published novels hit the market While I cannot promise you your young author will make the same progress, I can assure you your learner will have an an inspiring, illuminating and informative environment to grow as a writer.
Learning Goals
Students will get feedback on their writing by way of the proven writers workshop approach. Participants will interact with one another and share selected writing with club members and the instructor.
