What IS reading comprehension? Research shows that it is more than just decoding the words on the page. Word recognition is only one part of the process. I have always been interested in science. Both of my parents were science teachers and so I received firsthand knowledge about the wonders of scientific observation and discovery. When I was young, creating a science project was one of my most favorite activities- even on a Saturday. Also, I was a fan of biographies and I devoured these types of books about scientists. As I grew older, my interests veered toward women scientists and their hard-won accomplishments and contributions to the world of biology, genetics, and math. Reading about men scientists intrigued me just as much. I hope that by teaching this class, I can inspire a student to love the topic as much as I do. Perhaps this lesson can create a seed of knowledge that may grow a full-fledged science enthusiast.
