Class Experience
The word "origami" is Japanese for "to fold paper." Originally, this craft was only available for the elite. Now, it is for everyone! Origami has many great benefits like: - developing hand-eye coordination - improving concentration and spatial awareness - helping with math skills such as symmetry, measurements, proportions, geometry, 3D comprehension, sequencing, and problem-solving In this ongoing class, I will be teaching skills and creations that reflect the individuals skill level. Students will not need any prior experience. However, experienced students will be able to dive into intermediate and some advanced creations immediately. We will usually fold a different creation each time we meet, except in advanced creations where 30 minutes is not enough time. Some of my favorite creations that we will be making are flower bouquets (which require multiple pieces of paper), bird mobiles, and "modular origami" (using several identical shapes that fit together to form a larger creation). Students will be able to ask questions as needed. We will also discuss potential ideas for future creations. Students will need origami paper. There are many different types and brands that can be used. And advanced students will enjoy some of the specialized types, such as "textured" or even "wet folding" paper designed to give the user even more control over fine details of the creations. If you only have regular printer paper, we can make that work. Other good options include wrapping paper, magazines, and any paper that doesn't rip easily. "Construction paper" is not a good option, though. Students will be able to simultaneously see my hands and face in order to get a clear understanding of each step. It is my goal to create a relaxed and peaceful environment. At the students (and/or parents) request I can have soft instrumental music playing in the background. I'm a big fan of the old "Bob Ross" painting series, and try to capture that spirit in all my classes..
Learning Goals
The goal of these classes is to help the learner develop folding and creasing skills, as well as spatial awareness and problem-solving skills, in order to advance them to higher levels of origami than they thought were possible. Perhaps even be able to invent origami creations themselves!

Supply List
Learners will need origami paper or different colors and patterns, according to their preferences. While origami paper is recommended, plain printer paper can be used, as well as magazine paper, wrapping paper, and certain types of craft paper. "Construction paper", or any other easily torn paper, is not recommended.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!
Welcome to my classroom.
I love playing music. I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, dulcimer, and recorder. I've played in many bands over the years, and my wife and I write music together.
I have enjoyed folding origami since I was a teenager. When I was in high school, my parents had me decorate the Christmas tree exclusively with gold and silver foiled origami stars and angels. Even today, it gives me something to do in any situation since there is usually a piece of paper or napkin lying around.
I have been teaching our children music for the past 3 years as part of our homeschooling. I also teach them origami, math, coding, science, knot tying, and fire building. I supplement with Minecraft to make these subjects fun.
I am a huge advocate of the "9 Intelligences." My approach to teaching is that everyone is an excellent learner in the way they are "wired" to learn. I try to discover their way and use it to teach my students.
I have a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Fun fact: My family and I play music at nursing homes for those residents that are unable to experience the community.
I look forward to seeing you in class!
