In this one-time class, we will create beautiful Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding! First, we will observe and discuss this ancient papercraft, including its history and geography, as well as the correlation to symmetry and mathematics. Next, we will look at different origami projects and discuss the techniques involved. Finally, we will create 2-3 origami forms together. This lesson provides several positive learning outcomes. By observing, discussing, and creating Origami, the learners are also able to gain a deeper understanding of art in our world around us. They will learn how to apply the elements of art and principles of design while creating the paper forms. Math is also integrated into this lesson through learning about symmetry & vertices. Other learning outcomes include positive communication and critical thinking skills. Group discussion during the presentation and activity promotes positive communication, as does sharing the artworks in the concluding discussion. Additionally, the learners will utilize critical thinking skills by applying, analyzing and synthesizing their prior knowledge and experiences into the class discussion as well as into the artwork they create.

1 file available upon enrollmentcopy paper pencil/crayon/marker (optional to decorate Origami forms) scissors (only if needed to cut paper into a square)
Although Origami does not require any glue or scissors, some projects do require a square sheet of paper. Please have proper supervision and care if using scissors to cut copy paper into a square.
