This is an interactive circle-style class supporting early literacy using original stories and songs. I also incorporate art and movement activities to help build self-confidence and community within the class. We will have a meet and greet in the beginning with songs and movement games. Then we will read and tell original stories using books, props, puppets and/or a story board. Finally we’ll end with a show and share and closing song. Each class will have a similar structure but specific literacy skills will be learner directed based on the learners’ skills. This is a fun and engaging class for preschoolers. Below I've listed some interesting statistics and benefits regarding early exposure to reading and literacy activities. Classes will rotate based on learner interest but will include themes like: Bugs Weather Seasons Holidays around the world Pets Woodland creatures Jungle animals Australian animals Favorite foods Colors Early exploration of Romance and American Sign Languages I have permission from Ferst Readers to share this information, https://ferstreaders.org/resources/fifty-top-literacy-statistics Reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skills; it also builds motivation, curiosity, and memory. Bardige, B. Talk to Me, Baby!(2009), Paul H Brookes Pub Co. Creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months. Harris, Louis. An Assessment of the Impact of First Book’s Northeast Program. January 2003. Children who are “well-read-to” (at least five times a week), when asked to tell a story, used more literary language than unread to children, and they used more sophisticated syntactic forms, longer phrases, and relative clauses. They were also better able to understand the oral and written language of others – an important foundation for the comprehension skills that will develop in the coming years. Wolf, M. (2007). Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain. New York: Harper Perennial. When adults read to children, discussing story content, asking open-ended questions about story events, explaining the meaning of words, and pointing out features of print, they promote increased language development, comprehension of story content, knowledge of story structure, and a better understanding of language– all of which lead to literacy success. Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Stephanie and I love sharing stories, movement activities, art and songs with young children and their families. I have experience homeschooling my own children and working in all kinds of educational settings. From Montessori and traditional classrooms to playhouse stages to rustic beachside homeschool group meet-ups, I have helped support early literacy, performing arts, and self-confidence in children through creative learning. Multicultural stories, songs, finger plays and STEM/STEAM and movement activities allow a special connection between class participants of all ages. I studied vocal music at Interlochen Arts Academy, have a BA in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Michigan State University, Montessori Primary Certification and my AAS in Early Childhood. I’ve worked with children and families for almost 30 years on 3 continents! I love to sing (of course!), garden, cook, read, travel, wander through dunes and along beaches. I am married and have 3 children, 2 rescue dogs, and a small flock of backyard chickens. I can’t wait to meet you!
