Class Experience

Comprehension is the main goal of anything we read. Often, for both children and adults, stories and information we read that lack any prior knowledge or interest can be challenging to understand. This one-time class introduces the DRTA strategy to help comprehend unfamiliar reading topics. Each student will read an informational story written at his or her reading level. The teacher directs (D) and activates each student's thinking, including making predictions about the story. Students read (R) the story to a pre-selected stopping point and answer questions from the teacher regarding what they've read. At the end of each section, students review the story; and verify or modify their predictions by finding supporting statements in the story. The result is a better understanding of the information read.

Learning Goals

Students will activate their prior knowledge of an informational story. Based on their current understanding of the subject, they will make predictions about what they will learn while reading. Guided by teacher prompts, students evaluate their predictions and revise them if necessary to help comprehend the information.

Hello

Thank you for visiting my Outschool Teacher page. August 2022 marks my second anniversary teaching on Outschool and I thought it was time for a profile update. I’m Tim, an Ohio-based teacher in the United States. I celebrate my investment in Outschool, especially my long-term relationships I’ve developed with both learners and parents. My talents include:

•	Master’s degree in Education
•	Ohio state licensed Mild-to-Moderate Intervention Specialist (Kindergarten through 12th Grade-Special Education)
•	Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Reading Endorsement for teaching the Big Five of the science of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension
•	Skilled at writing individualized education plans (IEPs).
•	Orton-Gillingham certified through the Dyslexia Training Institute (DTI) in San Diego, California to teach learners diagnosed with dyslexia. Orton Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach to learning, which includes auditory, kinesthetic (touch) and visual instruction.
•	Six years previous employment teaching at an alternative school for children diagnosed on the autism spectrum and/or life trauma.

In my initial profile, I highlighted a famous educator, Dr. Nicholas Hobbs, who developed the 12 Principles of Re-Education. While much of Dr. Hobbs’ research focused on re-educating emotionally disturbed children, his beliefs apply to any learner or classroom. Those tenets include:
•	Trust is essential.
•	The group is important.
•	A child should know some joy each day (My favorite).
