Description
Class Experience
Comprehension is the main goal of anything we read. Often, for both children and adults, stories and information we read that lack any prior knowledge or interest can be challenging to understand. This one-time class introduces the DRTA strategy to help comprehend unfamiliar reading topics. Each student will read an informational story written at his or her reading level. The teacher directs (D) and activates each student's thinking, including making predictions about the story. Students read...
Students will activate their prior knowledge of an informational story. Based on their current understanding of the subject, they will make predictions about what they will learn while reading. Guided by teacher prompts, students evaluate their predictions and revise them if necessary to help comprehend the information.
There is no homework; and students will receive a DRTA template they can use throughout their education.
Parents will receive a Mastery-based skills assessment after class.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
