US Grade 4 - 6
In this class, students will learn mathematics skills to meet educational goals. Parent and tutor can collaborate to determine grade level, areas of focus, and style of practice. This can include homework help, or direct instruction. Learners will be introduced to the Growth Mindset, and will become familiar with viewing challenges as attainable goals. I will highlight the student's strengths, and will celebrate each triumph of learning. We will not shy away, however, from working hard to fill in any learning gaps. We may use videos from Khan Academy as well as other excellent sites. We will always allow for play and conversation as we learn. Should any big feelings, such as frustration or incapability arise, we can name these feelings and accept them, but challenge their validity. Your child can learn and have fun with math! Example--Student has not mastered adding fractions with like denominators. We will review the meaning of a fraction using models and everyday examples. We will use these hands-on materials (paper pizzas, legos, etc) to model adding simple fractions, such as 1/2 + 1/2 = 2/2, which is 1. We will practice written addition sentences with fractions, using illustrations at first. We will look into common pitfalls, such as adding the denominators, and use models to understand why this is not accurate. Students will have a chance to ask any questions. We will then solve fraction addition without models or illustrations. The student will explain their process to me, playing teacher if they like to use play in class. We will explore only adding fractions with like denominators. Once this is mastered, we will begin to explore adding fractions with unlike denominators.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of math skills based on personal learning goals developed by the teacher and parent.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from UMBC
Hello! My name is Kathleen M, but everyone calls me Miss Kathleen. All of my classes are safe and inclusive places for all learners.
Teaching is my job, but it’s also my favorite thing ever! I have taught everything from dance, to sign language, to English as a second language, and my students range in age from toddlers to adults. My degrees are in early childhood education and performing arts, I have a TESOL certificate, and I am proud to say that I was chosen as Teacher of the Year while working as a pre-kindergarten teacher. Recently, I have enjoyed homeschooling my own kids, and volunteering as a sign language interpreter at our church.
I believe that teaching is about creating a rapport between student and teacher, and that by forming positive relationships we can pave the way for creative learning and achievement. Learning should always be fun, and any subject is rich with lessons that connect to life in many ways.
When I am not teaching, I love gardening, playing games, and going to the ocean with my family and our little rescue dog. Hope to see you soon! :)--Miss Kathleen
