Parental Guidance
WARNING FOR STUDENTS 9 & BELOW: Learners 9 and under are still learning to read and read at a much slower rate than 10 year olds. For 9-year-olds, parents and learners must use their best judgement on reading ability, music reading readiness and comfort at a new instrument. Students who are below the age range but already reading music using letter and rhythm notation are welcome! If your learner reads very slowly, consider joining me for 1:1 lessons first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To fully participate in any music class, it's best to check your audio settings in Zoom first! Watch below to find out how to turn on ORIGINAL SOUND on your device: iPads → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1pkirtPH9o other platforms → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEZMRtrSsYY Read here: → https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/8230649-setting-up-music-lessons-for-zoom Parents must stay off camera as much as possible but will need to assist as necessary during class time to help their young learner find the correct keys, clap along to the rhythm, and control the mute button in Zoom. Parents will also be expected to assist with at home practice throughout the week. Absolutely NO EATING during class. Learners will need the constant use of both of their hands as well as to engage with their full attention. Learners who are eating on camera may be asked to leave. I will screenshare games I have made in Google Drive, Kahoot!, and Scratch to review music theory concepts if we have time in class. Please make sure your learner has purchased-- and preferably printed-- all sheet music linked under 'Supplies.'

As a teacher with over twenty years of experience, I have been running my own piano studio full-time for the last decade. I started learning music in piano lessons when I was four years old and am currently teaching my 15th academic year as a piano teacher. I also am a former public school art teacher, university adjunct professor, swim instructor, dance teacher, and math tutor.

The Suzuki method is at the core of many of my ideas about teaching music. Shin’ichi Suzuki believed that music is like a language and therefore should be taught like one-- learning to speak before reading and writing and that learning should take place in a loving and supportive environment, with constant repetition, and with helpful modeling from the parents. Like Montessori, the Suzuki philosophy is student-centered, includes lots of learning games and enjoyable activities, and demands that learning activities be planned according to the student's needs and level of development.
