If you are willing to try something new and learn to "see" in a new way, your drawing abilities will improve. This is a beginner drawing class for students who are interested in drawing realistically, but have no previous knowledge. In this class, students will learn to "see" as an artist, focusing on positive and negative space, details, values, and textures that others may never notice. Many of the exercises in this class are based upon Betty Edward's book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain;" these methods have served me well in teaching others to draw realistically for nearly 20 years. We will draw from reference photos, drawings, and from life. Each class will focus on learning a new drawing technique. This list of techniques will rotate back around again with a different subject matter each time, so you can continue to take the class and review techniques with a unique drawing at the conclusion of every class. Students who continue to repeat the class will improve their mastery of techniques and can start to develop a body of portfolio-quality work. Students often attend this class for years, developing their skills and expanding their portfolios and sketchbooks. Throughout the class, students will be encouraged to share their artwork with me so that I can help them improve and better tailor my instruction to the class. At the end of class, I save time for students who want to share their personal artwork made outside of class time. Schedule of Topics: Week of 4/14: Vase / Face Illusions, Tessellations (Positive/ Negative Space) Week of 4/21: Gesture drawing (Human figures in action!) Parental Guidance
AGE & READINESS TO LEARN:
I welcome 8-year-olds to this class, but with a word of caution. I push my students to improve by pointing out places in their image and suggesting techniques to make their image more realistic. This is a very standard form of learning by art critique. Some 7-year-olds have joined this class for 10 or more lessons and succeeded with parental help; some 13-year-olds struggle to emotionally deal with criticism or find the class too visually challenging as a first art class. If you're unsure your learner is ready, or just want to try a first-time art lesson, please join me in Drawing and Sketching Animals for Beginners:

VIDEO CAMERAS:
Although it is NOT required, students who leave their cameras on and/or frequently turn on their cameras to share their artwork with the teacher do better in this class. I can offer more help if I can see the artwork students are making!
NOTE: Outschool requires a visual check-in via video at the start of every lesson.
MATERIALS:
In addition to noting the lesson of the week as posted in the class description, keep an eye on the classroom posts! Occasionally, I will post images to the Outschool classroom to print and/or trace. If you do not have a printer, there will be other options provided to you; please let me know immediately if you're having trouble accessing the image.
Pre-Requisites
New beginner artists welcome! Eight-year-olds should consider Drawing and Sketching Animals for Beginners if this is their first art class. See "Parental Guidance" section below.
