Ongoing Fifth & Sixth Grade Math - Authentic and Deep Understanding
What's included
4 live meetings
2 hrs 40 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. Mathletics.com will have assignments three times per week that can be completed by many learners during class (for live help) but some may choose to work outside of class or need to complete work. Rarely, if ever, will this exceed 20 minutes.Assessment
Mathletics.com will provide immediate feedback as well as assessment automatically.Grading
Teacher commentary on student strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement shown can be provided by request.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Students will receive direct instruction in mathematics, starting with numeracy, daily. Practice work is assigned and assessed daily by the instructor and immediate feedback is given both live and through a Mathletics account that is included with registration. In this manner students receive all instruction, immediate feedback on practice work, and assessment by a licensed master teacher. Gifted, mainstream, and struggling learners are accommodated through personalized leveling and assignments. A typical week in the course includes two days focused entirely on foundational skills, one day making the bridge between these skills and the real world, and a fourth day (highly anticipated by all students) that has authentic 'real world' application of mathematics. Though this class can be joined anytime, here is an outline of the first four weeks: Week of July 1st: Multiplication, It's Everywhere: Students will demonstrate expertise in multiplication, tips and tricks will be shared, and a real world tie-in will permeate the discussion. Patterning will be used to both challenge strong students, and, for struggling learners, simplify the learning. Week of July 8th: Fractions fractions everywhere: Taking the 'reverse view' of multiplication, we will start in on division, which, in reality, is just a matter of fractions. This tie-in between the two topics will continue into the following week. Week of July 15th: Fractions - Simpler and Equal? This week will further solidify the understanding of division and fractions we started the previous week and extend into simplest form, equivalent fractions, etc. Week of July 22nd: Puzzles! This week will focus on finding pattern rules, the nth term, and, ultimately, starting algebra and algebraic expressions. The order of operations is also sure to make an appearance!
Learning Goals
We will move between the strands of Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, and Data Management and Probability in a manner that allows all students to join in and master concepts. For example, following a focus on building multiplication abilities long division would follow, extending in to fractions, then to probability, and back to multiplication. In this way students are able to see the connections between skills and concepts as well as join the class at anytime and be able to 'get up to speed' with the group quickly.
