Class Experience

Welcome to our class! My name is Ms. Andrea. I'm so happy you are here!

In this ongoing class, students will engage in many different number talk activities. Number talks encourage students to develop number sense, speaking and listening skills, honors multiple ideas, supports learning from peers and recognizing that there is more than one way to solve a problem.

During each class students will be reminded that mathematicians ask big question, come up with ideas, look for answers and talk with other mathematicians.

We will start this class with a hello song and then begin with our warm up "Notice and Wonder" number talk. During a "Notice and Wonder" students will be shown a picture on the screen. They will be asked what they notice and/or wonder. Students will raise their hand to share out their thinking. I will record their ideas so they are visible for all students to see. Students will be encouraged to listen to each other, as I will ask them questions like, "What do you think about what_____ said?" This really helps develop students speaking and listening skills. "Notice and Wonders" offer many entry points for all students. Some students may still be working on their speaking skills and may repeat what another peer noticed or wondered. Students may notice the amount of something in the picture, or point out something they see, or may have a math question about what they see. There is no correct answer. All ideas/ answers are honored.

After our warm up, we will move on to the bulk of our time together. During this time we will have a focused number talk per session.

Each class will act as a stand alone class but will have the same schedule of events. We will always start with a song, followed by a "Notice and Wonder", a number talk mini lesson and a goodbye song.

Early math skills are so important and it prepares children to be independent thinkers and promotes the development of mathematical conversations.

Some important things to note about this class:

*I will mute students when needed minimize background noise. I cannot unmute students on my end, please teach your child how to mute and unmute-this will help reduce frustration when it is their turn to share.

* At times, this class will highlight holidays. Should you have any concerns please let me know.

📚 Below are the lessons of my class each week, many weeks may have the same category, however, different numbers and ideas will be used each week. Repetition is good! The more practice with a topic the more successful. For instance, in my own public school classroom, I do number talks all school year and many of them are in the same category!
