Class Experience

In this class, students will learn how to draw a coordinate plane and properly label it with the correct terms of x- axis, y- axis, origin, and Quadrant I. Students will then learn how to plot the points on a coordinate plane using positive integers coordinate points [ex. (1,2)].

The time of our class will be structured with introduction, teacher instruction, guided practice, individual practice, and conclusion. During the introduction, the teacher will get to know all students as well as gauge prior knowledge students may have about the topic. To instruct the students, the teacher will introduce what a coordinate plane and a coordinate point is. The teacher will explain each term and part of the coordinate plane and where they are located on the coordinate plane. The teacher will show how to plot the coordinate points on the coordinate plane. During guided practice, students will first learn how to draw a coordinate plane and label the coordinate plane with the names of each axis (x & y), origin, and Quadrant I. They will also learn how to correctly number the coordinate plane. Students will then use the Mystery Picture assignment to start plotting the points to solve the mystery picture. The teacher will do points #1-5 on the Mystery Picture assignment together with the students going step by step on how to plot the points correctly. The teacher will check after each point to assess that students are doing it correctly. For individual practice, students will be asked to plot points #6-10 on their own. The teacher will check after each point to assess that students are correctly plotting each point. To conclude, students will be asked to connect the points to solve the mystery picture. They will be given a few minutes to connect the points and color and decorate their picture. The students will also have a chance to share their decorated picture with the teacher and other students.

I taught sixth grade math for four years. I am passionate about helping students learn new math skills while making it fun and engaging. As a teacher, I make sure to create standard-based lessons that help students to learn the curriculum while making it fun to learn!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Olivia Schuster and I am so excited to get to teach you! I taught at a private school for five years: one year in second grade and four years in sixth grade. While teaching sixth grade, I helped pilot and implement a new Common Core curriculum, as well as introduce, teach, and lead the Science Fair for the entire sixth grade. I also created science labs and math activities to help enhance curriculum and meet the standards. I also taught English to Chinese student online for a little over a year, so I am very familiar with teaching students through an video chat format.

Due to a recent move, I am now a stay-at-home mom to my two wonderful daughters, age 3 and age 1. Instead of being just a stay-at-home mom, I like to call myself a stay-at-home teacher. I love teaching and am excited to teach students (other than my own kids) again!

My desire as a teacher is to create a learning environment where students can learn through their own discovery. Through engaging and creative standard based lesson plans I want to instill in my students a passion for learning. My expertise and experience enables me to reach each student at their own level and promote the idea of being a life-long learner while having fun. I am excited to meet you and to teach you very soon!
