What's included
6 live meetings
3 in-class hoursAssignments
1 hour per week. Independent assignments will be incorporated into live class meetings and feedback will be given during live meetings.Grading
After completing the course, students will receive a report that describes their current mastery level of each learning goal and suggestions for next steps in their math learning.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 5
Over the course of this class, students will make sense of multi-digit multiplication. Each lesson will include worked out examples, opportunities for students to explain their thinking or share their work, and time for independent practice with teacher feedback. While this class will focus on computation, some word problems may be incorporated to help make the concept of multiplication more concrete. The first two classes will progress from skip counting from a known fact, to using an array/area model and partial products to multiply a multi-digit number by a single-digit number. The next two classes will extend the array model/partial products strategy to multiply two two-digit numbers together, then finally introduce the standard algorithm as a shorthand. The final two classes will be opportunities for students to practice multiplication with the strategy of their choice.
Learning Goals
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide (Common Core 3.OA.B.5)
Multiply a whole number of up to three digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations (Common Core 4.NBT.B.5)

over 3 WeeksLesson 1:
Using Known Facts
We will learn how to start with a multiplication fact we know and build up to the problem we are trying to solve. (Example: If I know that 10x45=450, then I can find out that 11x45=495)
30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Array Model and Partial Products (Part 1)
We will use array visuals to show how we can break down numbers in order to find their product. This lesson will focus on multiplying two and three-digit numbers by a single-digit number. Example: 45x6=(40x6)+(5x6)
30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Array Model and Partial Products (Part 2)
We will extend our work with array models to mutliply two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. Example: 23x45=(20x40)+(20x5)+(3x40)+(3x5)
30 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Standard Algorithm
We will introduce the standard multiplication algorithm and make connections to the methods that were previously introduced. Students will be able to explain what it means to "carry" a number so that the steps for multiplying two numbers sticks.
