During this introductory session, we'll look at the following topics: I. Latina et Anglica. If you're learning English, you need to learn Latin. English is full of Latin words. You'll start to learn about two dozen Latin words (many of which you probably already know and didn't know it). II. -us, -a, -um. You'll start to learn the basics of Latin as an inflected language, identifying subject nouns as masculine, feminine, or neuter. III. Salve. Quod Nomen Est Tibi? We'll end the class by learning how exchange polite greetings with each other in Latin. Why Learn Latin? Other than, as noted above, better understanding the huge number of English words that are derived from Latin, there are three other reasons to learn Latin. I. Critical Thinking. Latin is an inflected language with some rather specific rules regarding its grammar. Proper Latin involves learning to think logically and to draw correct inferences. II. We're All Romans. Rome's influence on the world continues down to the present day, centuries after the Roman Empire fell into ruin. Studying Latin means studying Roman history, which is an important part of the history of West. III. Latin Is Fun! No, really. It is, even if Latin isn't easy. Of course, it's through succeeding at challenging things that we become better people. Nota Bene: This class is intended for students with little to no experience with Latin.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I've taught introductory Latin in both private and charter schools to students as young of 5-6 years old to as old as 16. It's a subject that I not only enjoy, but also firmly believe should be taught in nearly all schools. My own children, both in their early 20s now, took years of Latin in elementary, middle, and high schools, and I've seen first-hand the difference it can make in a student's ability to learn.
