What makes something money? What are the characteristics and functions of money and how does it help people cooperate? In this course, we'll take a look at examples of items that have been used as money in the past and compare them in a bracket-style tournament. Students in the course will each be assigned one item and try to make the case as to why that item is the best form of money around. Each child will be asked to do a little online research about how their item has been used as money (information will be provided, but researching these can be really, really interesting) and then share with other students in the class what they found. Each week, one or two students will present some information about the historical money they researched. The rest of each class session will consist of the entire class discussing how well each of the examples demonstrates the characteristics and functions of good money. By the end of the course, the students will identify which one they feel is the best type of money overall. Will students pick the money that you and I are familiar with, or choose something else?

Parental Guidance
The content of the course is totally age appropriate, but parents may want to be prepared for conversations that may come up as a result of class discussions. These may include historical examples of colonialism, economic disparities between rich and poor, and political oppression. Again, these topics are not necessarily part of the course curriculum, but students may ask questions that lead to these conversations. I am happy to discuss any concerns with parents directly.
Supply List
A short PDF booklet describing 16 different historical examples of items that have been used as money will be made available to all students. I highly recommend parents purchase a copy of The Tuttle Twins and the Creature from Jekyll Island ($9.99 from https://tuttletwins.com/product/the-tuttle-twins-and-the-creature-from-jekyll-island/) though it will not be required for the course.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
