Class Experience

This class is the FLEX schedule for my popular Money Identification and Counting With Mario four day class. There will be NO LIVE meetings. Each week the students will watch a lesson at their own pace and play games, do worksheets provided, and interact with me via messages.

Students will be learn to identify a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter and a one dollar bill. Students will learn the value of each coin and bill and practice counting with Mario up to $1.00. I use google slides throughout my teaching. Students will learn a fun song to help them recall the value of each coin and identifying characteristics of each coin.

Week 1/Lesson 1: Students will be introduced to my money song. We will sing this each class. (A print out is available.) Students will then be introduced to the penny and the nickel. This lesson will focus on counting pennies and nickels independently and together. Students who can count by 5s, will benefit more in the lesson; however I will briefly introduce counting by 5s. I suggest having a 100s chart available during the class. (A print out is available.) We will count up to 100. Students will identify 100 cents equals $1.00. *For the students who are able to count by 5s, and are able to proceed farther, I will encourage them to count beyond $1.00.

Week 2/Lesson 2: Students will sing the money song, review pennies and nickels, and be introduced to dimes. We will practice counting dimes independently and then combining pennies, nickels and dimes. Students who can count by 10s will benefit more in this lesson; however I will briefly introduce counting by 10s. Again, a 100s chart is a great option to have when learning how to skip count. We will count up to 100. Students will identify 100 cents equals $1.00. *For the students who are able to count by 5s and 10s, and are able to proceed farther, I will encourage them to count beyond $1.00.

Week 3/Lesson 3: Students will review all previously taught material. Students will be introduced to quarters. We will practice counting by 25s up to $1.00. Will will combine quarters and other coins slowly. *For the students who are able to count higher amounts, I will encourage them to count beyond $1.00.

Week 4/Lesson 4: During this class we will review each coin. Students will practice counting all mixed coins. I will increase the amount of coins we count in this final lesson.

Each Sunday or Monday (depending on the schedule), I will send out the lesson for the week. Students can work at their own pace and message me with any questions during the week. During the week, students can complete various games sent to them on Kahoot! or Boom Cards. All will be submitted to me, so I can see how your child is comprehending the material.

At the end of each week, students can submit a video or picture related to the question I will ask each week. For example, I may ask the student to take a video of them counting coins or send in a picture of an amount of coins I have requested using various coins to add up to the same amount.

*There are no prerequisites for the class, HOWEVER students find more success if they can skip count by 5s and 10s. I will teach how to count by 25s.

**Please note: This is not an interactive Mario game. My slides include pictures of Mario and other characters from the games.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Rebecca Lockhart. I have my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and I am a certified teacher for grades K-8. I have taught all subjects in the public schools, ESL (English as a Second Language) online, and I currently homeschool my three children ages 5-11. I also teach a Nature Studies course in my area and facilitate two book clubs on a weekly basis.

I began my teaching career nineteen years ago. It is difficult for me to narrow down my favorite subjects. I just enjoy teaching. I guess if I had to peg down a few, my favorite subjects would include grammar, reading, math, and history. I started my own book club over six years ago to feed my love of consuming books. I recently began a book club for my oldest child and several of her friends to help them find great novels and learn skills to help increase their reading ability, comprehension and enjoyment. I love to write. Many call me a grammar nerd. I have dreams of being an author when I grow up. ;) Math is a skill I am passionate about. I believe a solid foundation early on can really help a learner succeed in math the rest of their life. I am also passionate about Nature Study and learning about the world around us. I believe, in a world full of technology, that it is essential and very beneficial for students to get outdoors and observe the world around them.

I have been teaching online since spring of 2019 and I joined Outschool in the summer of 2020.
I enjoy meeting students from all around the globe. Once you have been in my class, you will realize I'm upbeat, maybe a little silly at times, but I am excited to get my students to learn and most importantly love learning.

I hope to see your child soon!
