Mini Musical Theater: Beginner Full-Curriculum Class in Acting, Voice, and Dance

Class Experience

Through the instruction of an experienced musical theater actor, students will learn the fundamentals of musical theater (acting, voice, and dance) through fun and engaging activities and exercises in a fun and nurturing environment! Each activity will target a different acting, voice, or dance fundamental skill while also touching on other reading comprehension, verbal, social, and emotional skills. Learners will delve into building characters, using the body, face, and voice to effectively express a specific character, scene work, vocal physiology, acting the song, and the basics of musical theater dance and choreography. Through these activities, learners will come out with a greater understanding of themselves, the world of musical theater, and creativity!

The class will also provide students with an opportunity to interact with each other and the instructor on a regular basis. This will include group exercises, scene work, and class discussions, which will help students learn to work as a team and build their social and verbal skills.

Week 1: Introduction to Musical Theater & Storytelling

Week 2: Introduction to Acting: The Body, Face, and Voice, Objectives, and Actions

Week 3: Introduction to Voice: Voice Technique, Music and Sound in Theater

Week 4: Introduction to Dance

SUBSITUTE POLICY:
Ferrell Studios is an organization on Outschool with about 15 teachers with professional training and experience in the arts. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. Thank you for your understanding!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of musical theater, including acting, singing, and dancing
Improve and refine physical and vocal presence on stage and develop the ability to express emotions and characters effectively
Learn how to analyze lyrics and music of various musicals to understand how they convey different emotions and messages
Develop dance skills and learn through taught choreography and dance combinations
Apply conventions of character development including character traits, motivations, and physicality
Understand the different career opportunities available in musical theater, including acting, singing, dancing, directing, producing, and stage managing

Michael Kelberg
Angela Klawiter is a recent graduate of Marywood University holding degrees in Theatre and Early Childhood Education. A performer from a young age, Angela has studied and performed under industry experts in acting and musical theatre singing for upwards of 17 years. Although she is a singer and actor at heart, she has also had the opportunity to direct and costume design numerous productions. Additionally, she is a playwright and producer, having had the opportunity to professionally produce her original one-woman show at the Scranton Fringe Festival. Some of her other favorite productions include Sound of Music (Maria), Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Narrator), When We Dead Awaken (Irene), Dancing at Lughnasa (Kate), and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Christopher). Her vocal experience extends to professional recording and solo work as well as recent solo and collaborative recitals. Angela is thrilled to be joining Ferrell Studios to help the next generation of performers develop skills and gain confidence in their singing.
