In this course, students will learn about the different units of measurement used in Metric system to measure distance/length, weight/mass and volume/capacity. Students are expected to have the basic understanding of decimals, multiplication by powers of 10. A fun mnemonic will be used as an example to help the students remember the order of the different units. Strategies to convert from one unit to another within metric system will also be taught. Once the topic is explained, the students will be asked to come up with their own mnemonic and a mind map to capture their learning. They will also apply the strategies to solve several conversion problems during the class. This course will lay a very strong foundation in understanding the Metric system and that learning will help them solve problems with confidence.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an educational service business owner and a teacher. I run a learning center in Suwanee, Georgia. I quit my 17 year long IT career a few years ago to get into teaching, as making a difference in the way our students learn is my passion!
I have published a book on Active Learning which provides a structured framework for the children to learn anything. My methodology is interactive and fun with an emphasis on having the students create a mind map for every topic they learn. Creating a visual capture of the topic learned makes the students reinforce the learning through their own efforts and thus, their retention is longer and the recall is faster.
I teach a variety of courses - Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, Art, Origami and Yoga for elementary grade students. I strongly believe that our responsibility as teachers is to make sure that we kindle the natural curiosity in the students when we introduce a topic to them, provide the tools and methods to achieve the required learning and make it an enjoyable experience. When the kids enjoy the process of learning, the required learning will automatically happen. That is what I aim for in every class I teach and it gives me immense pleasure to see the progress some of my students have made over the past couple of years. I look forward to helping your children succeed in their learning endeavors!
