This mathematics course is designed for students aged eleven to fourteen who are looking to strengthen their understanding of core math concepts. The course covers a range of topics including integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and basic algebra. We emphasize problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and real-world applications of math to ensure that students not only grasp the material but can also apply it in everyday life. 

Through interactive lessons, hands-on practice, and engaging activities, students will gain confidence in their math abilities and be prepared for higher-level mathematics. Whether they need extra support or are looking to excel, this course adapts to different learning styles and paces.

This course aligns with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS) in the United States and with relevant provincial standards in Canada, ensuring that students are learning the foundational skills necessary for success in middle school and beyond.

Learning Goals

1. Develop Fluency in Basic Arithmetic and Algebraic Concepts
   Students will achieve fluency in working with integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and basic algebra.
2. Enhance Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking Abilities 
   Students will strengthen their ability to approach and solve various mathematical problems by developing logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.

Lesson 1:
Introduction to Algebra and Basic Operations
 - Objective: Understand variables, constants, and basic algebraic operations.
- Key Concepts:
  - Introduction to algebraic expressions (terms, coefficients)
  - Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic expressions
  - Solving simple linear equations (one variable)
- Activities: 
  - Interactive problem-solving with real-world examples
  - Group work on basic algebraic expressions
- Homework: Solve 5-7 simple algebraic expressions.

Lesson 2:
Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
 - Objective: Convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and solve related problems.
- Key Concepts:
  - Understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages
  - Converting fractions to decimals and percentages (and vice versa)
  - Applying these concepts to word problems
- Activities: 
  - Interactive quizzes and word problems
  - Practical applications (e.g., calculating discounts, interest rates)
- Homework: Worksheet with conversion and word problems.

Lesson 3:
Introduction to Geometry and Measurement
 - Objective: Learn basic geometric shapes, their properties, and how to calculate perimeter and area.
- Key Concepts:
  - Types of geometric shapes (triangles, rectangles, circles)
  - Perimeter and area calculations for 2D shapes
  - Introduction to the concept of volume
- Activities: 
  - Visual learning through shapes and diagrams
  - Hands-on activity measuring everyday objects
- Homework: Practice problems on perimeter and area of given shapes.

Lesson 4:
Introduction to Data Analysis and Probability
 - Objective: Learn how to interpret data and understand basic probability concepts.
- Key Concepts:
  - Reading and interpreting data (bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs)
  - Mean, median, mode, and range
  - Introduction to probability (likelihood of events)
- Activities: 
  - Analyzing simple data sets
  - Probability games and real-life scenarios
- Homework: Data analysis worksheet with basic probability questions.

With a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering and a Bachelor’s in Microbiology, I have experience as a Biology Science Instructor and tutor for elementary and high school students. My teaching philosophy emphasizes a supportive environment, critical thinking, and real-world applications of knowledge. Outside of teaching, I mentor young African students with the Chosen Generation Club and enjoy exploring nature, which often enriches my biology lessons.
