Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
The class will be a one on one tutoring session that will be tailored to each individual learner.  The class will be centered around the students learning, math strengths, and building up their confidence.  A sample of what will be taught is listed below along with strategies and techniques I will use to teach your learner.

1st-3rd Grade Math for ESOL/ English Speakers: 
Introduction to Numbers: Students will be able to identify and write numbers from 1 to 20 in both English and their native language. Basic Addition and Subtraction: Students will be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems using numbers 1 to 20.Understanding Shapes: Students will identify and describe common shapes (circle, square, triangle) in both English and their native language. Comparing Quantities: Students will compare groups of objects using terms like more, less, and equal.

4th-5th Grade Math:
Introduction to Multiplication: Students will understand the concept of multiplication as repeated addition.  Multiplication Facts (1-10) Students will memorize and accurately recall multiplication facts for 1 through 10. Introduction to Division: Students will understand division as the inverse of multiplication.  Division Facts (1-10) Students will memorize and accurately recall division facts for 1 through 10.  Solving Multiplication and Division Word Problems: Students will apply multiplication and division to solve word problems.  Patterns in Multiplication and Division:  Students will identify and create patterns using multiplication and division.

6th -8th Grade Math:
Introduction to Algebraic Expressions: Students will understand the concept of algebraic expressions and identify variables and constants.  Evaluating Algebraic Expressions:  Students will learn to evaluate algebraic expressions by substituting values for variables. Writing Algebraic Equations: Students will translate verbal statements into algebraic equations. Solving One-Step Equations:  Students will solve one-step equations using addition and subtraction. 

A few Teaching Strategies I will use amongst other things:

Discuss the importance of numbers in daily life.
Use visual aids to show numbers and their corresponding words.
Introduce addition and subtraction using manipulatives (e.g., counters).
Use visuals and stories to explain problems.
Discuss shapes found in the classroom and in their cultures.
Use interactive activities to explore shapes (e.g., shape hunt).
Encourage vocabulary development in both languages.
Use of arrays to visualize multiplication.
Strategies for memorization (e.g., skip counting)
Use of visual aids and songs to help memorization.
Relationship between multiplication and division
Strategies for understanding division.
Use of arrays to visualize division.
Use of real-life scenarios to relate division.
Direct instruction on solving one-step equations.
Hands-on activity using manipulatives to model equations
Discussion on how to interpret word problems.
Practice converting word problems into equations
Steps to evaluate an expression.
Importance of order of operations.
Learning Goals
Students will learn their grade level math curriculum.
Students will learn and build confidence with working math problems.

Paper pencils, know the assignments being worked on in class. Syllabus in order for tutor to know in advance what math the are previewing or working on in class in advance.
