Class Experience

At the beginning of the class, we will cover the basic steps for combining like terms. Students will have a doodle notes sheet to use and decorate while taking some notes to help them get started. Once we have covered the steps of how to combine like terms in equations, we will begin by solving basic equations with only one term in them. We will review after each one as a group and begin to fill in our mad lib. As we continue, we will add terms to the equations to increase the difficulty. There are ten equations in all. Students will solve equations independently and then we will review them together as a class, one at a time. If there are questions, we will cover them as we go. Once we have solved all ten equations, we will match the answers with a word or phrase and complete the mad lib. The equations are provided when you enroll as well as the mad lib to complete. The doodle notes page is also provided upon enrollment. This is a great class for those beginning to learn how to combine like terms and older students who may need a refresher course on the topic.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Ashley. I have a bachelors degree from Auburn University in elementary education and a masters degree in biblical counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Over the past ten years, I have spent most of my time working with children and education in various capacities.

I have taught in the public school classroom, teaching everything from first grade reading to sixth grade social studies. Most of my time in the public school system was spent teaching third grade math. Math is my favorite subject by far. I am passionate about helping students understand the why behind what you do in math class, not just memorizing a process.

I have also tutored in various capacities over the past ten years. I began tutoring one-on-one with a company while I attended seminary. I tutored various subjects and ages during this time with my focus being high school math. I also tutored reading for elementary age children during this time, some Chemistry, Biology, and a good bit of SAT test prep. I enjoyed my one-on-one tutoring quite a bit as I got to build relationships with my students and see them grow in confidence and knowledge. It is always a wonderful thing to see a child realize they CAN do it on their own!

For the past four years, I have been tutoring online with a company teaching English as a second language. This has been an exciting new experience in tutoring for me, as it is quite different from other tutoring I have done. It has challenged me to use my hands and body more while explaining things. Helping children understand new words using pictures and movement has taken my teaching to a new level. It has helped me to reach more learners and meet them where they thrive.

I aim to make class time fun and engaging while still staying on task. I love to incorporate all of my experiences into the classroom by using funny voices when I read or drawing pictures to help understand math problems. You will also see me use my hands quite frequently. I find that if a child is allowed to learn in a fun manner, they are more likely to retain what is being covered.

I cannot wait to see your student in the classroom!
