In this one-time class students will explore the meaning of the equal sign through the use of a variety of hands-on strategies. The concept of the equal sign will be demonstrated using counters, connecting cubes, and visuals to make make clear connections. Students will be taught how to determine if a subtraction equation is true or false and everyone will be encouraged to actively participate using song, whole-body responses, and their own manipulatives. Students are asked to have with them something they can use as counters, such as cereal, cubes, or blocks.
Learning Goals
Students will understand the meaning of the equal sign and be able to determine if a subtraction equation is true based on that understanding.

Supply List
Students will need some sort of counters such as cereal, cubes, blocks, etc. or paper and pencil.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
