This class is for students who have no background or very little background in Chinese. There is no prior knowledge needed for this class. This is Not a Chinese immersion class. Please note we will not be playing Mario in class, but rather this class has a Mario theme to aid in learning Chinese. I am a native Chinese speaker and have taught Chinese for over ten years from kindergarten to adult learners. I have found teaching using strategies that employ multiple intelligences is the key to learning. In my classrooms, students learn through visual, music, language, and kinetic movements. Through using multiple intelligence strategies, students are engaged and it makes learning fun and more effective. Week 1 - 2 1.Hello Nihao 2.Numbers 3.Number story Week 3 1.Greet someone politely and say goodbye 2.Song in Chinese 3.Introduce yourself, Week 4 1.Review materials and play game 2. Greetings How are you? Good! Week 5 1.Review materials and play game 2.Identify and describe family members and pets 3.Learn and sing a family song in Chinese Week 6 1.Review materials and play game from the previous weeks: family members and pets 2.Learn Chinese words on hobbies I like to make learning exciting and fun for my students. There are four beginner classes I offer. I have created a recommended class order to follow (A, B, C, and D) for these classes. Each of my beginner classes has a theme to help your child learn Chinese. I will provide flashcards, worksheets, and materials for these classes. In this beginner Mandarin Chinese 1 A and 1B class your child will be able to: Beginner class 1A has a focus on pinyin, greetings, and numbers with a Mario theme. Your child will be learning vocabulary words using Mario worksheets and pictures. In beginner class 1B, students will be able to have a conversation on hobbies, family members, pets and can ask others what they like and dislike. Students are encouraged to complete a family tree project to share in class to apply what they have learned. Please note we will not be playing Mario in class, but rather this class has a Mario theme to aid in learning Chinese.
Learning Goals
Students will learn these topics on vocabulary words, sentence structures and apply them in their conversation. They will also know how to pronounce the words and know the meaning of the words. Students will engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions in Chinese. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hello and Nihao, I'm Rita Plouffe, known to my students as Ping laoshi. Bringing a wealth of experience as a Chinese educator, I have a proven track record across all levels of education. My expertise encompasses translation, effective communication, and the art of teaching Chinese as a second language, backed by a Master's degree in teaching from Brandeis University.
My teaching philosophy revolves around student-centered learning, immersing students in the language through the rich tapestry of Chinese culture, and exploring facets such as art, history, and food. I am eager to impart my unique methods, which involve making the learning experience enjoyable through activities, play, and contextual association.
Over the past decade, I have contributed to various educational institutions, instructing students from kindergarten to adults. As a certified teacher, I have valuable experience in a Chinese immersion school. Throughout my career, I have successfully taught Chinese I, II, III, IV, and AP, with many students excelling in their HSK and AP exams.
I believe in making learning exciting and enjoyable for my students, by offering a variety of classes. Currently, I provide Chinese with games and music classes, 1-on-1 tutoring, private 1:2 tutoring, and a flexible schedule class.
In my small group classes, I personally design the curriculum and create materials, including worksheets and games. Through interactive activities, your child will learn Chinese in a dynamic and enjoyable environment. With small class sizes, students have ample opportunities to share and practice with me and their peers. I'm excited to welcome you to my class!
