Makeup for Empowerment and Self Esteem
In this 3 week class, we will explore makeup artistry from a perspective of personal empowerment and self love, through a combination of makeup history, self love exercises and practical makeup application skills.
This class will be a blend of makeup history, makeup application techniques and practical skill building as well as self love exercises. The focus is on helping students frame their perspective on makeup as one of self empowerment, play and artistry, rather than the often toxic culture of impossible beauty standards that is so often dominant in the beauty industry. Upon completion of this class, there will be an option for an ongoing makeup class that will cater to specific student requests...
Students will understand the cultural context of makeup and leave the class able to make conscious choices about how their approach makeup from an empowered standpoint. They will learn skills for self love affirmations that they can use in their lives going forward and will have a solid understanding of the basics of makeup application and theory.
I am a professional makeup artist as well as an anti bias educator who has been teaching adults and children alike in topics of anti bias education, peace education and social justice for over a decade.
While not required, in order to fully participate with interactive makeup demonstrations, a basic makeup kit is helpful in this class. Students who would like to learn without participating in demos are welcome to join the class without makeup and just watch and learn. Students who would like to participate in makeup application should have: -A beauty blender sponge -A fluffy blush brush -A small fluffy eyeshadow brush (or several different sizes for more ease of application) -A fine pointed angled liner brush -Foundation that matches their skin tone -Concealer that matches their skin tone -Bronzer that is 2-3 shades darker than their skin tone -Blush in a color of their choice (peachy colors are recommended since they are universally flattering) -Mascara -A black or brown eyeliner, liquid or pencil (liquid recommended) -A brow pencil and/or tinted brow gel that matches their hair color -Neutral eyeshadow in 3 tones (light, medium and dark) -At least one bright colored eyeshadow or eyeliner -At least one lipstick or gloss of their choice in a relatively neutral tone -Gentle makeup remover or wipes In addition, students who want to go further with their application may want: -Primer and setting spray -Translucent powder -Highlighter (powder, cream or liquid) -More color options to play with for eyeshadows and lip colors -Concealer that is 2-3 shades lighter than their skin tone -Glitter Please let me know if you have any questions about materials, I am happy to help.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This class will discuss the evolution of modern feminism in context to makeup and beauty standards. Feminism is defined by this teacher as the belief in social and political equality of the sexes in such a way that all genders are supported and better off. My form of feminism in no way disparages men, but rather advocates against limiting gender norms that are harmful to all.
