Homework

1 hour per week. Each week, learners will have short, creative assignments to prepare for the next class (about 20–30 minutes). Examples include: Finalizing their show idea Drafting a script or outline Recording a practice take Sharing a draft or reflection in the classroom The final project will be a 2–5 minute podcast episode or sample segment.

Beginner Level

In this 4-week beginner podcasting course, learners will create their very own short podcast episode—from concept to recording. Each week, we’ll walk through a key stage of podcast production: brainstorming ideas, writing a script, recording audio, and learning simple editing techniques. Along the way, learners will explore different podcast formats, develop a show concept, and choose topics that matter to them.

Classes are structured with a mix of mini-lessons, individual work time, and group discussion. I teach in an encouraging, inclusive style that allows learners to explore their creativity while gaining practical communication skills. Learners will be invited to share their work if they feel comfortable, and we’ll have dedicated time to celebrate progress and offer positive feedback.

This class is perfect for creative kids who love to talk, tell stories, or share their opinions—and no prior experience with podcasting or public speaking is needed. Late joiners will receive a recap message and quick orientation to help them catch up, along with access to slides and optional tutorial videos.

Lesson 1:

Week 1: What’s a Podcast? + Show Idea Brainstorming

 We’ll start by listening to a few short podcast samples to understand the different types of shows—storytelling, interviews, commentary, etc. Learners will brainstorm possible show ideas based on their interests and choose a format that fits. We’ll walk through how to define a target audience and show theme. Students will leave with a working title and a few episode ideas.

Lesson 2:

Week 2: Writing Your Script + Planning Your Episode

 This week focuses on outlining and scripting. We’ll learn how to plan an engaging episode with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Students will draft an intro, create a segment outline, and start scripting or bulleting their first episode. We’ll also cover tips for sounding natural and confident while reading.

Lesson 3:

Week 3: Recording Basics + Voice Delivery

 We’ll walk through how to record audio using browser-based tools like Vocaroo or Soundtrap. Students will practice speaking clearly, pacing themselves, and using tone to match their show’s vibe. We’ll discuss the importance of recording in a quiet space and practice a short recorded intro or episode snippet.

Lesson 4:

Week 4: Editing Overview + Showcasing Our Work

 Students will get an overview of simple editing techniques (removing pauses, adding music, transitions). We’ll talk about copyright-free music and how to structure a final version of their episode. Students who feel comfortable will share their final mini episodes or a recorded segment with the group. We’ll celebrate progress and reflect on what they’ve learned!

Parental Guidance

We will be using browser-based audio recording tools such as Vocaroo or Soundtrap (free versions). No account is required to use Vocaroo, but Soundtrap may ask for one depending on the device. Learners will also be encouraged to use headphones with a microphone for clearer audio. Families should ensure students are in a quiet, safe space when recording. No sensitive or upsetting content is included in this class.

I am a podcast producer, workshop facilitator, and business owner with over a decade of experience in communications, storytelling, and public speaking. I run a national podcasting community where I teach workshops on content creation, audience engagement, and media literacy. While I have not formally taught children, I was a co-op parent in a preschool setting and am a mom myself. My teaching approach is supportive, creative, and confidence-focused, and I’ve adapted my adult-level podcasting workshops into age-appropriate lessons that make audio storytelling fun and accessible for kids and teens.
