Class Experience

Please send Ms. Brooke a message about specific learner needs before requesting a time for this course. Together, we will establish the skills your learner will make goals around; starting with 2-4 goals, but we can add more as needed. Below is an example list of potential goals:
- Uppercase letter recognition
- Lowercase letter recognition
- Letter sound recognition
- Noun sound recognition
- Number recognition 1-30
- Count to 100 by memory
- Count by 10s
- Count by multiples 5s, 2s, etc.
- Addition within 10
- Subtraction within 10
- Identifying 2D shapes
- Identifying 3D shapes
- Color recognition
- Color word recognition
- Sight words
- CVC words
- Writing letters and numbers
- Tell a story from beginning, middle, and end
- Describing feelings
- Describing seasons
- Identifying various types of weather
- Graphing and data tables

Depending on the number of goals chosen at a time, we could work in a variety of schedules. However, the general outline of how the session goes as follows:
- Greetings
- Identify goals to be worked on for the day
- Divide the rest of the time into 5, 10, and/or 15 minute "chunks" to practice skills related to each goal.
- Identify positives and growth towards goals

Learners will be working towards earning ribbons for each of their goals. For larger goals, they will be broken into smaller goals so that learners earn more ribbons which will encourage a positive mindset as we work towards those longer goals. For learners who have a reading goal, we will have ribbons for each book they will read so that they are having an increased sense of mastery and confidence as we work through each book.

My teaching style is one that meets learners where they are and encourages them to continue to grow. I believe all learners deserve to be spoken to as learners, mistakes are proof that you're trying, and that learning should be a fun experience!

Depending on the topic and the learner's learning style (auditory, kinesthetic, visual, or a mix), we may use manipulatives or other physical objects and/or a digital slideshow. It is important that together we determine what approach will work best for each individual learner and then establish the tools to reach them.

**For learners who may need assistance with computers or manipulatives, parental supervision may be needed.

Learning Goals

After establishing learning goals, the learner will work towards mastering each established goal.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
*I am currently not teaching on Outschool, but I do check messages.*

I teach all domains of science classes including Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science. I enjoy incorporating engineering and STEM projects as I can in addition to valuable life skills such as discussion strategies, organizational tools, and identifying and managing emotions. I have over a decade of experience working with kids between 4 weeks and 17 years old. While my passion is science, I also offer math, social clubs, and circle time classes.

I am certified to teach middle school science and health/fitness courses. I have a Masters degree for teaching middle level science as well as a Bachelors degree for teaching secondary science. My Master’s Thesis was about how “Middle Schoolers Should Be S.T.R.E.A.M.ing” in which I studied the effectiveness of integrating Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Art, and Math in middle school classrooms.

My goal is to get every student I meet excited about learning science - No matter their age! STEM fields are taking over our world and science teaches us the skills necessary to thrive in these fields such as analyzing, interpreting, and applying information. I strive to increase students’ curiosity and passion for STEM/STREAM through my own fascination of the field.

Some fun things about me are:
- I am learning the science behind making my very own teas
- I am obsessed with Yellowstone National Park
- I have 2 cats: Azlan (3 legged cat who knows tricks) and Kevin (4 legged kitty who thinks he’s a dog)

Please message me if you have questions, suggestions, or requests. I look forward to seeing you in class!

- Ms. Brooke
