Class Experience

This class is designed for young learners who wish to learn how to speak in front of a group, an audience, or simply improve their social skills. This quality is very important during school years since there are projects and written assignments that they need to present. This will also help them as they grow older and seek employment out in the work field. The course is 4 weeks and we will cover a new aspect of public speaking each week. At the end of the course, the student will present a small speech in front of the class.

Week 1

Introduction to the course and everyone introduces themselves to the class. We share ideas of what we can say about ourselves when meeting and greeting someone. We’ll discuss how to create a good introduction that grabs the attention of the audience.

Volume and modulation. We’ll learn how we can speak at an appropriate volume and modulate the voice rather than sounding monotone.

Week 2

Using visual aids. We’ll learn how using props or imagery can bring your speech to life.

How to create an outline. Rather than writing everything down word for word, we’ll learn how we can become better speakers if we have an outline or bullet points. Students will also pick a topic that they wish to write about and present to the class in the last week of the course.

Week 3

Hand gestures and enthusiasm. We’ll look at how hand gestures can assist the speaker when he or she is nervous.

Eye contact. Students practice using eye contact when they read a short story and try to speak with good volume.

Week 4

A good conclusion. Every good speech needs a conclusion. How can we come up with a good conclusion? We’ll also look at the speeches topics that the students have chosen. They can also ask any questions about their speech to make sure they feel ready for the speech presentation at the last week.

The student presents a speech to the class and applies the different points that we analyzed throughout the course.
