Go bananas for fractions! One meaning for “go bananas” is “to express great excitement about something in an exuberant manner.” We are going to go bananas for fractions using bananas! This is a one time class that is an introduction to fractions. We will use bananas to learn what fractions are. Students will learn what the word “fraction” means and then we will use a bunch of bananas and individual bananas to demonstrate the concepts. The teacher will do all of the banana cutting. A one-page print-out will be posted to the class. Two copies of this should be printed before the class starts. There should be 18 cards all together. Please cut the cards apart before class. During class, the students will use a pencil to mark each banana and write the fraction below. After will fill out each card with a fraction, we will play a version of the card game Go Fish using the cards. Students will learn about halves, thirds, fourths, and fractions as part of a set. Students will learn what the numerator, fraction bar, and denominator are. Students do not need to know anything about fractions to take this class. This class will be very interactive.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I like to teach elementary math and reading by using games and arts and crafts to reinforce the materials being taught and enrich the learning experience. I've created board games and card games that I have used when I home schooled.
I currently teach second and third grades in a private school and use games to enhance learning with my students. Many of these are games that I created.
My philosophy behind my teaching is that learning can be fun and it can be useful to the learner. I like to involve the learners and invite plenty of active participation.
My class sizes are small so that I can really engage with each student.
