In this one-time class, we will begin with a quick review of terminology for fractions to include: numerator, denominator, improper fraction. students will follow along with their chocolate bars as I read The Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar Fractions Book. They will learn the following fractions: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 1/4, 3/4, 1/5, 1/6, 5/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/10, 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12, 7/12, 8/12, 9/12, 10/12, 11/12, 12/12, and 13/12. Learners will understand how to identify equivalent fractions, for example, 12/12 = 1/1 or 1 whole. Students will have opportunities during the book to ask questions and share their examples. At the end of the book I will call on learners to share their a fraction of their chocolate bar, for example, I might call out for someone to show me 7/12, the person who I call on will need to place that many chocolate pieces on their plate and hold it up. Another example might be to hold up 1/2 of their chocolate bar which would be 6 chocolate rectangles. Each student will get at least one chance after the book to share their knowledge of fractions. At the end of class learners get to eat their chocolate bar! I have also included two optional worksheets. It's the same worksheet but for two ability levels. This worksheet will be in the classroom upon enrollment. *While learners are encouraged to share I understand that not all learners feel comfortable with sharing in class so I do not pressure them to share. **Learners should have some prior knowledge to fractions before this class.**
Learning Goals
Learners will understand how to add fractions: 1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 = 1 whole or 3/12 + 9/12 = 12/12 = 1 whole
Learners will practice identifying fractions: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 1/4, 3/4, 1/5, 1/6, 5/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/10, 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12, 5/12, 6/12, 7/12, 8/12, 9/12, 10/12, 11/12, 12/12, and 13/12

I am currently a stay at home mom of one boy who is 2 years old, and three girls, my youngest daughter is 6 years old and my older two girls, who are actually my stepdaughters, are 13 and 15 years old; they live with us 100% of the time so I consider them my own.
My husband is in the Marine Corps. We are both originally from central Illinois, we currently live in Virginia but I have also lived in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Missouri, and North Carolina.
I attended Illinois State University where I have a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. I completed the Professional Development School during my senior year at ISU, which is where college students Student Teach for an entire school year rather than the traditional one semester student teaching program. I have taught Preschool and Kindergarten for 6 years in brick and mortar schools. I have also taught Middle School Special Education and 4th grade for 1 year each in the same school district. Before Outschool I taught ESL online to students in Asia.
I am passionate about education! I love taking something that children are not interested in and making it fun for them. I feel that it is crucial to teach students in a variety of ways as we all learn things differently. I am passionate about reading, I read with my children every day.
I also enjoy going to the beach, swimming in a pool, hiking, bike riding with my family, traveling, and crafting, as well as playing with my girls and watching them learn. I also enjoy doing yoga with my daughters, as well as, spending time with my family and our family dog, June Bug.
I’m excited to meet your child and help foster their love for learning! Please follow me to explore the wonderful world of learning in my classroom!
*I offer a sibling discount when two or more students are enrolled by the same parent in the same class section. I will offer 50% off of one child. Please send me a message to request my sibling discount when you have two or more children enrolled in the same class to receive the discount. Sometimes parents have the same name as another parent in the class or I miss it so I only offer the discount per parent request.
