In this ongoing weekly course, we will discuss current events from around the world! Each week, we will use a reading comprehension passage specifically designed for students in their Lexile reading range. We will discuss the article- including vocabulary and comprehension. We will mostly depend on the article to provide a non-biased view of the topic. I carefully choose current event articles with this effort in mind. Also, if there are various perspectives possible, I will send additional relevant articles to the students so that they can see the topic from various perspectives. In class, we also have time set aside to discuss various perspectives. This is such an important concept for them to learn! After class each week, I will send the article and comprehension questions to the students so that they can go over them again and share them with their families. This makes a great family discussion of current events- in a student-friendly format! I have these same current event discussions with my students in my brick and mortar classes, and they love learning about cool events from all over the world! They always appreciate our discussions and seeing topics from various angles and through different sources or "lenses." I know my Outschool students will love it just as much! Join me for this fun, weekly look into what's happening around the world! Let's "Keep Current" together!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The students will be given the opportunity to share any other perspectives that they have or that others could have about the topic of discussion. This helps the students become more understanding of opinions other than their own. I will also share multiple resources for students giving various perspectives on the topics. Still, I do work diligently to choose current event topics that are not extremely controversial.
Supply List
No extra materials are needed- I will share the articles with the students on the screen. I will also send the articles and any accompanying vocabulary, comprehension, quizzes, and any other additional resources through our Google Classroom class page or on the Outschool Classroom Page. Thanks!
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will use articles from NewsELA for this course. I will add each student to the NewsELA class by sending an invite for you to join. For anyone who would rather not deal with an outside source, I can also add a PDF copy of each article that we discuss in the classroom for your convenience.

Georgia Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I think it is important for students to have an understanding of important events that are going on around the world. It allows them to better understand situations and cultures. It also gives them greater knowledge, adding more relevance to their conversations and discussions. I believe that students should always "Keep Current" with news events. This format allows us to explore these current events in a student-friendly format- while also increasing their reading comprehension and vocabulary! Join us today!
