US Grade 3 - 5
In this weekly class we will discuss age appropriate news from the previous week, including news about science, nature, sports, culture, and more. Every class will include some big news stories and some U.S. news, as well as a kid friendly debate topic. Then Learners will vote on at least one additional topic to discuss. Learners will have the chance to participate in discussions about the events and share relevant experiences. Learners may also talk about other subjects from time to time as a natural progression. Learners will have the chance to debate the chosen weekly topic, with the debate moderated by me. Learners will also have the chance to ask questions about the news and share their favorite parts of the news at the end of the class if there is extra time. I will use Nearpod to facilitate engagement during class. Learners may join Nearpod with the link I provide in the chat box in class, or they may go to join.nearpod.com and use the code that I give them. Learners are not required to join the Nearpod, but they may enjoy the class more if they do! Nearpod does not require a log in, and has fun features like drawing and collaboration boards. ***SCHEDULE*** Each week we will use news from kid-friendly online news sources that will be sent via the classroom. Due to the current events nature of this class, every day will be different. Here is an example of topics that a class may cover: - Current events: Big News stories - U.S. News - News from Around the World - News about Animals and the Environment - News about Science and Technology - News about Arts and Entertainment - Photos - Kid Friendly Debate questions

Other Details
Learning Needs
I am licensed to teach those with unique learning needs, and will differentiate for students as the class progresses. If your Learner has a specific need, please message me before enrolling so that we can discuss it.
Parental Guidance
This class is intended to inform young people of various current events, with as little bias as possible. However there is often some implicit bias within our views that may change how some topics are discussed. I will be moderating the conversations so that topics are discussed with respect. Please message me if you have any concerns.
I will refer to the online articles as part of the discussion, but we will not be reading the articles during class or looking at the websites in class. I advise parents to read the articles with their Learner. This will ensure that parents find the material suitable for their Learner, and that the Learner is prepared for the discussions.
Learners can still participate without reading the articles, but they will enjoy class more if they have read them before class.
Supply List
A device with which to read the news articles for the week.
