Through my modelling during our read aloud, I will teach our learners prosody (when oral reading sounds much like speech with appropriate phrasing, pause structures, stress, rise and fall patterns, and general expressiveness) along with strategies Good Readers use when they read. The Good Reader strategies include Check for Understanding, Ask Questions, Tune in to Interesting Words, Back Up and Reread, Use Prior Knowledge to Connect to Text, etc. and they were selected from The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment & Instruction Book by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. I've selected this lesson because of the success my former students have had as readers as a result of the same combination of learning experiences when we shared them together in the classroom.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the joy of listening to a story. I will model how a reader should hear/experience the words they read from a page. They will also learn their abilities to think like a good reader during a reading experience by using strategies that I will demonstrate during the story.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified elementary school teacher who has been reading aloud to students, particularly 3rd and 4th graders, for over 25 years. I have repeatedly used Good Reader strategies from The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literacy Assessment & Instruction Book by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser to help my students develop and enhance their reading skills with read alouds in a mixed ability whole group setting . I have seen proof of tremendous enjoyment and growth from reluctant readers to the most advanced readers in my class by teaching Good Reader strategies in this way.
