Journaling: Learning Mindfulness & Healthy Coping Skills Through Self-Reflection
In this one-off class students will learn to analyse behavior, notice coping skills, and find healthier alternatives if necessary.
Class experience
In this class we will be looking at how active journaling can be used to help us develop mindfulness and healthy coping skills. First we will look at what mindfulness is, moving on to active journaling and how to do it, finally we will put into practice what we learnt through an exercise and discussion. This class is laidback and friendly. We will look at a short clip of a common scenario that we as humans face. We will use this clip to discuss how the character might've been feeling, what...
Students will learn to look back at situations they found themselves in and how they reacted. After looking at this they will learn whether they were happy with their responses and how they could respond better (if necessary) next time. Often we go through life without reflecting on how our feelings are directly linked to our actions/behaviors. This is a skill that can be taught and practiced and we can learn to take control of ourselves and our feelings. Students will learn to notice how their bodies are physically feeling in situations, what they're thoughts were during that moment, and the resulting behaviors.
As a trained youth worker working with foster children for 7 years, I have significant experience in helping children of all ages link their thoughts/beliefs to their behaviors. No matter where we come from, we all have feelings and thoughts that drive our actions. In this class, we will look at common situations we face to see what our feelings/thoughts are and how we can best respond.
A PDF downloadable will be provided after class. This downloadable contains the process we use to actively journal and some prompts your student can use in the future. All the students need is a notebook and a pen.
