Journaling About Horses: Writing an Equestrian Diary (Ages 10-12)
Doreen Rose: M.S. Education, B.A. Spanish, TESOL
In this one time class, students will work through a pre-created journal using their creative writing skills to journal about their favorite ponies and horses.
In this course, students will begin with a pre-designed equestrian journal template as a Google Slides document. During class, we will review fundamental creative writing skills like how to add interesting details about the setting and location of a memorable equestrian event or how to use metaphors when describing one's favorite horse. Students will have time to create and personalize their own copy of the journal. They will be able to save and print out their finalized version of the...
Students will improve their creative writing and computer skills while creating their equestrian diary.
I am a certified language teacher with over eighteen years experience teaching in New York public schools at both the middle school and high school level. I teach foreign language classes in Spanish and Italian as well as English to speakers of other languages. I privately tutor American high school students in preparation for the SAT and ACT college entrance examinations, with a specific focus on the English/Writing & Language portions of the exams. I am also the owner of Bravo Rose Farm, a small private farm located on Long Island, New York, where I maintain my own three horses. I am an adjunct professor for Post University's Equine Studies program. I am an active member of the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Dressage Federation as well as a former Board member of the Long Island Dressage Association.
OPTIONAL: Students can bring to class digital images of their favorite horse or pony as well as any other images of them riding or being around horses that they might want to upload into their journal.
In the beginning of class, I will provide students with a link in the Zoom chat that enables them to access the template of their equestrian journal. Students will be asked to re-save the file under their own title and work on their journal throughout the class, editing it and filling in various sections with their writing. I will be screen sharing an example of the journal template to assist students as they work on their own journals. At the end of class, students will have the option to screen share their work and read their writings to other members of the class.
