This course is for the creative young mind with music in their head that they want to bring to life! It is very fulfilling to see your creations come to being. The topics I will cover in this class are the following: - modern music song structure (chorus, verse, bridge, etc) - basic musical concepts (chords, progressions, melodies, harmony, etc) - how to make musical plan/goals (without a plan, there is little or no progress) - saving work (sheet music programs, DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations such as garage band, ableton, logic, fl studio, pro tools, etc) - saving drafts (do I use a voice recorder, pad and pen, or Google Docs?) - making mistakes to progress, but not using making mistakes in an unproductive manner - the creative process - feedback on their current work and how to improve on it - becoming comfortable and confident in your creativity! While I will teach some basic music theory, most of what I teach will be pragmatic and useful. If the response is positive I would like to create a follow up class where we can meet a second time to give more feedback on their projects. Structure: 5-10 min - introduction 20 min - lecture 15 - 20 min - Q&A Requirements: A basic understanding of music theory is highly suggested but not necessary. (notes, tempo, staff, etc) A passion for creating music will do!
Learning Goals
By the end of the class I would like for students to be empowered with more knowledge and wisdom in order to create music with enjoyment!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Johnny and I am teaching from the San Fransisco bay area where I was born and raised. I have a passion for multimedia and music so that is my main focus in the classes that I teach. I majored in Business Administration and minored in Multimedia from California State University East Bay. I am in the process of creating a multimedia company. I also enjoy teaching! The saying, "you learn by teaching" is very true to me. I have been a substitute teacher for 2 years for classes of all ages, all conditions (spectrum) from pre-school to adults as well. I have subbed long term for classes such as music and Spanish.
For my musical background I started when I was in 6th grade learning the clarinet and then moving to alto saxophone in high school (then later baritone saxophone). I taught myself piano and guitar using the music theory I learned in grade school and after. I played in my universities' pep band and after graduating I joined my local church to do music there. I have extensive experience of what it's like to perform in front of a live audience on a weekly basis and how I managed being nervous before a performance! Before the lockdown I started leading the choir the beginning of 2020 so there is a lot in terms of musical knowledge and leadership I can provide that I want to share.
When I was in school the subject I had the hardest time was in math. I remember certain teachers that had outstanding patience and understanding and how much it made a difference to my learning. I teach the way I would want to be taught in the subject I had most difficulty learning, with care and enjoyment! I want to be as encouraging as I can because I understand learning something new can be very difficult.
