Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner Level
In this four week long flexible course, fractions for beginners, students will be introduced to fraction basics. They will learn the parts of a fraction, visual representations, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, simplifying fractions, and finding equivalent fractions.

In a FLEX course, there are no live meetings. Students will engage with the teacher and their classmates through the Outschool classroom page. Each week, students will complete an interactive Nearpod lesson. They will watch pre-recorded mini-lessons about each topic, create their own fraction resources, and complete week long, engaging fraction assignments and activities. These may be turned into the teacher for feedback and guidance.

Week one: Students will be introduced to the flexible classroom tools and format. They will watch a mini lesson about what a fraction is, will learn the parts of a fraction, and will begin to show visual representations of the fractions that they create. They may complete the worksheet pages for the week. Students will learn how to use everyday objects to show equal groups and create their own fractions.

Week two: Students will learn how to find equivalent fractions using multiplication. They will watch a pre-recorded mini-lesson about this topic, will complete the Nearpod lesson, and may complete this week's worksheets to practice their skills.

Week three: Students will be adding and subtraction fractions with like denominators. They will watch a mini-lesson about this topic and will complete the Nearpod lesson. They will practice writing their own addition and subtraction word problems.

Week four: Students will use division to simplify basic fractions. After watching the mini-lesson, and completing the Nearpod activities, students may try the "M&M Challenge" to practice their skills.

This is a great course for students who are just beginning to learn fractions, or those who need some additional practice with these basic concepts.

Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Educational Philosophy:
I believe that students succeed when they are engaged, valued, and when lessons are personalized in some way to each individual student. During each lesson, I use positive reinforcement and gentle guidance to ensure students feel safe sharing their ideas. I strive to foster an inclusive and relaxed classroom environment and encourage students to participate, learn from each other, and have fun with the materials.

I am excited to get the opportunity to teach your child, and hope to see them in the classroom soon!
