Class Experience

This intermediate ballet class is meant to improve on students current dance skills and technique. This class is for students who have already studied ballet and are looking to bring their knowledge to the next level. Previous ballet experience is required to enroll in this course. We will begin class by introducing ourselves. Students will be asked to share their name, age, and a fun fact about themselves in order to begin to make new friends in class and feel comfortable around one another. While introductions are being said, students will follow along in some stretches to prepare themselves for the rest of class and make sure no time is wasted. (warming up via stretching before class is not required, however it is always welcome). Next, we will perform more warm ups at the barre. These will include things like plies, tendus, stretches, etc. Here we will review some ballet basics to make sure students are on the right track. After barre exercises, we will move to “center floor” to practice skills such as leaps and turns. Next, students will be taught a short ballet combination or adage to practice and preform at the end of class. Class will be concluded with a grande reverence. Throughout class, I will demonstrate and explain the new steps we are covering for class, followed by the students practicing and performing the steps together. Feedback will be given throughout class, as it is incredibly important in the learning process. Students are always encouraged to ask questions and talk with each other during class if they need help in any way.
General Schedule:
Week 1 (July 7th)- Take it from the top; asses student's current skill level, readdress basics such as posture, positions, and placement
Week 2 (July 14th)- Strength for technique; barre exercises to build strength, develop turn out, build on current technique
Week 3 (July 21st)- Take it to the next level; barre exercises to prepare for more complicated center floor work
Week 4 (July 28th)- Take the stage; class based on center floor exercises to build balance and improve over all performance

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parental Guidance is always suggested for classes that are physically active, however this is not mandatory. As a teacher, I will be showing students how to dance with care and prevent injury. Please make sure your student has proper footwear and clothing, access to water, and a clear space to move before class begins in order to insure their safety.
Supply List
Ballet shoes are required for this course, as they are an important part of keeping dancer's feet safe, especially when dancing on floors in a home. Students must also have access to something that can substitute for a ballet barre. This could be any sturdy and elevated surface, such as a counter top or preferably a chair. Please have students wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in. Leotard and tights are recommended but not required. Students should have their hair pulled back away from the face so it won't get in the way while dancing (a classic ballet bun is always a good way to go, or a headband if the hair is not long enough for a full bun). Water should be close by so the student can stay hydrated through out class, as water breaks will be given often. This course is designed to be done in the possibly restricted/small area of the home, but make sure the student has a flat, clean surface to dance on and that they will not hit anything in the surrounding area while dancing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a professional dancer myself, I have many years of experience and training in the world of dance. In addition to being a performer, I have training in physical therapy which ensures that I can help prevent dance related injuries in my students. I have been teaching both dance and wellness and recovery for many years now and am very excited to share this knowledge with the students of Outschool to make sure their learning experience is the best it can be.
