1-2 hours per week. HOMEWORK: Students are expected to study/practice independently between class meetings. The nature and extent of that study/practice will be determined through conversation between student and teacher, in accordance with the student’s curricular goals and individual needs.Class Experience
In this class, learners new to Latin study as well as those seeking instructional support for their school coursework meet 1:1 with Dr. Karen Wieland. For instruction, we will use whatever Latin curriculum meets individual needs (e.g., Latin for Children, Cambridge Latin, Oxford Latin, Henle Latin, Memorial Press Latin, Wheelock’s Latin). Students will increase Latin vocabulary and grammar knowledge and engage in guided translation of Latin passages, all the while learning about culture and history. Guided practice and study support for the National Latin Exam is also provided, as needed. Specific pedagogical approaches will vary according to the needs of the individual learner. Each lesson will involve guided practice in the translation of sentence-series or texts presented via Google Docs or by document camera. Mini-lessons about specific grammatical, cultural, or historic topics will be embedded as relevant. Students will type or use annotation to record their thinking. INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY I am a dedicated and creative literacy specialist and a language buff with 20+ years experience working with students of all ages. This is my third year teaching Latin as a world language on Outschool and my fifth year teaching on the platform. Over 700 Outschool learners have taken courses within my popular series Vocabulary Building with Latin and Greek Roots and Affixes. I hold permanent teaching certification from New York State in Reading (grades K-12). I am also a certified Wilson Reading System dyslexia practitioner. I have extensive experience with Orton-Gow methods for literacy re/mediation; the foundation for that work was the introductory training I received through the Gow Teacher Training Institute. I taught Orton-Gow (Reconstructive Language) at the Gow School and the Gow School Summer Program for several years. Across the past decade, as a teacher educator and university reading center director, I helped to prepare several hundred reading teachers and literacy specialists in NY and PA. I completed my undergraduate degree at The Catholic University of America School of Music. My doctoral and master’s degrees were earned at the University at Buffalo School of Education, under the advisement of Dr. Michael W. Kibby, a nationally known literacy diagnostician and scholar. I have presented my research at several national and international conferences, including Literacy Research Association, International Reading Association, and International Dyslexia Association. Hello!
My name is Dr. Karen Wieland. I am a NYS-certified teacher (Reading K-12) , credentialed Wilson dyslexia practitioner, and Latin language teacher with 30 years of teaching experience.
Through my virtual private practice, I work with learners of all ages on reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, executive function strategies, study skills, and standardized test preparation. I also teach courses in Latin as a world language and English morphology and etymology.
I have an extensive background working with individuals of all ages who experience dyslexia and other language-based learning difficulties. I am a certified Wilson Reading System Dyslexia Practioner; Wilson is a derivative of Orton-Gillingham - structured, systematic, sequential, multisensory phonics, fluency, and comprehension instruction. I am also trained in Orton-Gillingham and Orton-Gow Reconstructive Language.
Prior to becoming a literacy specialist, I taught choral music and voice full-time at the high-school level. My undergraduate degree from The Catholic University of America was in vocal performance, and I worked individually with hundreds of young singers on vocal technique and repertoire to prepare them for college programs and careers in musical theater, chamber music, and opera.
In 2003, I earned an Ed.M as a reading specialist from the University at Buffalo, and in 2008 I earned a Ph.D in reading education from that same institution. For the next 10 years, I worked as a full-time teacher educator, running a university reading clinic and preparing several hundred PA and NY teachers for careers as reading/literacy teachers, specialists, and coaches.
It would be my honor to work with your child(ren) on Outschool!
Dr. Karen
