In this class we will look at the art in the book "If Monet Painted a Monster" by Amy Newbold. As we go through the book we will be comparing original works of art with the book's reimagined monster-style illustrations. While comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the pictures, the kids will be introduced to many different artists and different art styles such as realism, expressionism and surrealism. They will be able to discuss what they like about the paintings and what emotions the works of art evoke in them. After our discussion they will create their own monster masterpieces. They can choose whatever art style they like and they will have the opportunity to share their masterpieces with the class! My class setting is a relaxed, fun, open space for students to be able to discuss and express their thoughts about what we are learning. I encourage student interaction with not only myself but with their fellow classmates. Everyone is expected to be respectful and listen to one another but also feel like they have the ability to share their own thoughts and opinions. I believe learning should be fun and try to provide a space for that to happen.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to multiple different art styles as well as learn about the actual artists. They will be shown many classic works of art and their reimagined monster-style illustrations. They will learn to look at art critically and talk about what they see and feel and what the artist may have been trying to elicit from their work. They will take what they have learned from the art and put it into their own work when they create their own monsters.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from University of California Riverside
Hi! I love to teach classes that are fun and promote discussion and creativity. In all of my classes I mix critical thinking with out of the box thinking so that the kids learn something brand new! I find the best way to do this is by using books, video games, trivia and other interactive components to keep them engaged and wanting to learn.
My passion for critical thought stems from my degree in Philosophy. The integration of pop culture in my classes is rooted in a lifetime of toy collecting, video game playing, and during my time as a staff writer for an online comic book review site. Over the past five years I have created community-based, pop-up craft classes for parents and children that integrate culture and thought, and I am excited about the opportunity to share these types of activities with my students!
Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband, son and three cats! I like online gaming and spending a lot of time crafting.
