US Grade 3 - 6
In the first week of class, students will discuss a problem that Fairy Tale Land is having. They will act as Representatives and they will then draft legislation to fix the issue. They will be given the problem: Creatures of Fairyland are being terrorized by motorized vehicles running through the parks. They will be asked to draft a law that prevents or solves this problem. We will discuss the language and meanings and come up with a short law that solves the issue. In the second week of class, students have drafted a law we will discuss how 3 different States in Fairy Tale Land have interpreted the language of the law. Students will receive a legal challenge to their law before the second week of class. We will discuss how two different states have interpreted their law. They will receive this info before the second week of class. Students will then act as the Supreme Court of land to determine if one of the States have interpreted the law correctly and within the guidelines, they set out. Students will then listen to arguments from one of the States, they will ask questions, and come to an agreement about how the law was interpreted by that State.
Learning Goals
Oral Advocacy, speech, logic, reading comprehension, and civics.

There should be nothing sensitive in the discussions. We are discussing laws, criminal behavior (violating the law), and what that punishment should be.
