Hot Wheels STEM Summer Vacation Camp (4-5Yr): Week 1

Completed by 3 learners
Ages 4-5
Live Group Class
Can you create a ramp that makes your Hot Wheels car fly with speed or make your car travel without touching it? In this camp you will engineer, design, crash and test all things Hot Wheels to prove the science of force and motion. #academic

Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten
*Having your own Hot Wheels cars and track are not required but having some kind of moving car and track (or something that can act like a track like cardboard) will greatly increase the fun and interaction for the student.

Camp activities will provide a way to practice Science, Math, and Engineering through play. Through inquiry and investigation, learners and families will share moments of joy, excitement, curiosity, and wonder. All topics will be presented in a developmentally appropriate way. This class will help promote a Growth Mindset and develop critical thinking skills.

Students will begin each class with a brief overview of a STEM concept related to force and motion with a slideshow of pictures and video.

Students will then try to apply what they have learned and prove the science with their own supplies. During class, students will also enjoy observing the other student’s engineering designs and I will help facilitate building strategies throughout class.

Near the end of class, we will wrap up the lesson and students will have the opportunity to share their discovery or do a show and tell.

Each day we will have a different concept:

Day 1 Energy: We will learn how to maximize energy and explore various challenges to see which track designs facilitates the best energy for our cars.

Day 2 Aerodynamics: We will learn about aerodynamic car features and explore various challenges to see which features move our cars the fastest or slowest.

Day 3 Resistance: We will learn about the science of resistance and explore various challenges such as adding friction.)

Day 4 Momentum: We will learn about how momentum increases with the right design and explore various challenges that can continue momentum without touching our cars.

Day 5: Mass: We will learn how mass and weight affect car performance and explore various challenges of changing the mass and weight of our cars to increase force of motion.

Looking for something more? I teach weekly ongoing classes designed for all ages from 4 -14. Each age-levelled class dives appropriately into the Hot Wheels science, engineering, and mathematical concepts.

Learning Goals

The main STEM learning outcomes of the class are:
1) creative problem solving through engaging, exploring, questioning, explaining, elaborating and evaluating
2) persisting even when encountering an unexpected and difficult challenge (Growth Mindset)
3) recognizing opportunities for improving the design even after you think you're "done"
4) using creativity and imagination to generate and extend a design beyond an initial idea
5) implement Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Standards for Mathematics

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students may need help gathering supplies and putting track together.
Supply List
(Hot Wheels can be purchased at stores like Target, Walmart and Amazon for about $20).

All Camp Weeks will need:
Two or more Hot Wheels cars
Straight tracks (or something that can act like a track like cardboard, cookie baking sheets)
Clamps or something to secure a ramp to a shelve
Stacked books or raised platforms of various heights (such as a coffee table, a desk, a bookcase, pillows, countertop, or a kitchen table)
Items to attach to the cars: coins, paperclips, erasers, Playdoh etc.
Masking tape
Scrap paper or Post It Notes

Specific for Week 1: Various items to test friction such as these: tissue, paper towel, ziplock bag, piece of foil, fabric, sand if not too messy, frozen water inside of a piece of orange track (if not too messy)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
