US Grade 7 - 10
Across five weeks we’ll discuss the theory behind the main elements that contribute to a car’s speed, and look at how they influence the design of a car. We'll learn about different types of engines, what a spoiler and body kits are for, why tires are so expensive, how good brakes make a car faster, and more. Each class features a lecture and discussion on an element that contributes to speed. While the lessons we learn apply to most cars, we’ll focus on the cutting edge: Formula One. This class is intended as an overview of theory. We will not get into detailed mathematics, rather we will cover the physical principles from a concept and theory perspective. It is not required that students be masters of calculus, but familiarity with basic algebra will help. This element can be adjusted on the fly to accommodate varying levels of comfort with it.
Learning Goals
Understand the basic function of key elements contributing to a car's speed, including the roles of engines, aerodynamics, tires, and brakes.
Explore the underlying physics concepts such as force, work, power, friction, pressure, lift, and drag.
