In this course, we will cover the fundamental skills to master the art of writing compelling essays. With extensive experience in reading and grading essays, I have developed a simplified and clear approach to teaching basic essay writing. Through practical activities and engaging discussions, we will delve into essential skills week by week. Week 1: Crafting a Strong Thesis: We will focus on constructing a compelling thesis statement, the foundation of any successful essay. Week 2: Organizational Strategies: We will explore different organizational structures and techniques to ensure logical flow and clarity in your writing. Week 3: Harnessing Evidence: We will delve into the art of using evidence effectively to support your arguments persuasively. Week 4: Mastering Introductions and Conclusions: We will discuss strategies for crafting captivating introductions and impactful conclusions, leaving a lasting impression on your readers. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to apply the skills you learn through practical activities. Additionally, outside of class, you will have the chance to complete and submit essays for feedback, allowing you to refine your writing further. No prior writing experience is necessary for this course, as we will cover all the fundamental skills required for essay writing. Join us on this journey to enhance your writing prowess, whether you are a beginner or seeking to refine your existing skills.

Hi! I’m Karimah. I’m a mom of four, global citizen, ardent traveler, and communications specialist of 25 years. I’m originally from Alabama but call Raleigh, NC home for now. I’ve spent 15 years traveling and working abroad, primarily in journalism, communications, and marketing. Among the many roles I’ve assumed, I’ve worked as a teacher, AP teacher, university instructor, coach, trainer, consultant, curriculum developer, and evaluator.
I have experience working with ESL and EFL learners, as well as learning languages myself. I have lived cross-culturally and am experienced with teaching students at all levels of English language learning.
It goes without saying that my professional passion is helping others effectively communicate – whether through a speech, essay, presentation, or ad. My methodology springs from a singular truth; great communication is about understanding the motivations of the receiver and what you want the end result to be. Once you’re able to understand that, everything else will fall into place!
I’ve had immense fun seeing my students bloom into effective communicators. When it “clicks”, there’s an excitement in their eyes, which I look forward to seeing in each of my students’ eyes here!
