Reading is more than words on a page. The words tell a story, paint a picture in our mind, and apply meaning to the world around us. Learning to find the meaning in text is an important skill in fostering a love for reading. When we understand what we read, we can see the world in a book! This session will focus on reading for comprehension, retention, and application to a learner's schema (applying what they read to something they already know or have experienced). We will also focus on fluency, using phonics and decoding skills to determine unknown words. 
Each session will begin with a reading fluency warm-up, in which learners will read a passage that is at or just below their reading level. 
Then, we will read a text at the learner's instructional reading level to challenge and strengthen their skills, pausing for comprehension checks and application. We may complete comprehension or phonics activities that correspond with the reading as they align with learner's goals.
Finally, learners will complete a writing or retelling activity in which they compose a sentence or longer (depending on ability) answering a question about what they read.
After each session, I will post a summary of what we read and skills that we focused on as well as any data I collected during the lesson.
