Optional Homework: Ask around and see if there are any people in your family who have a Ham Radio License, and ask them for a cool story to share about it. Take a walk and see if you can spot any ham radio towers on houses in your neighborhood.

Class Experience

Tom is carrying on the legacy of his brilliant grandfather who trained servicemen to use radio and radar at various Navy training facilities when not overseas during WW2, as well as being a chief engineer for commercial radio stations, & having a 108 ft Ham Radio tower in his back yard. 

Tom has been a licensed Ham Radio operator for over a decade and is licensed in both the USA and Canada.

Tom is an electronics whiz who has built his own functioning Ham Radio equipment and towers. Tom is excited to share his passion for Ham Radio with you through his experience, knowledge and skills.

Teacher Tom is a designated STAR educator on Outschool. Star educators are top rated, experienced, and highly responsive, with classes that meet Outschool's quality learning standards. Tom is also an ACE Educator and was previously featured as a top educator on Outschool's EPIC Spotlight for being a Passion-Driven Educator.

Welcome to Ham Radio 101 where you will learn the why's and how's of Amateur Radio!

During our time together we will focus on the following topics:

What is ham radio and how does it work?
Why would someone want to become a ham radio operator?
How does someone become a licensed ham radio operator?
What are the benefits of belonging to your local amateur radio club?
What are some emergency situations where ham radio operators have benefitted their community?

This class will be a good mix of discussion and slides.  Learners do not need any previous knowledge or experience.

This class will introduce students to a unique hobby that will improve their communication, technical, and emergency response skills. It will also grow their circle of friends, and help them to become more self-reliant and of great value to their family and community in emergency situations.

Learning Goals

Students will understand what Ham Radio is.
Students will be able to decide if Ham Radio is a skill they wish to pursue, and how to pursue it if they wish.
Students will know what resources are available for them to use to become a Ham Radio Operator.
