In this course, the students will learn about Capoeira from Brazil via music and dance. This is a fun introduction to the basic movements of Capoeira modified for children. You can expect children to get a full workout while they practice body coordination, awareness, and mobility exercises. We will always start the class with a time-in. The time-in is a moment for everyone to bring their attention and focus to our class by stretching and breathing together. After we are warmed up, we will do exercises or drills standard to Capoeira training ie. frog hops, gorilla walk, etc. We will then go over basic moves such as the ginga, esquiva (I call escape), cocorinha (I call ball), and benção (front kick). We will learn what a roda (wheel/circle) is and how to move in the roda. All music is in Portuguese, very energetic, and age-appropriate. My teaching style is very intuitive. I try my best to read the energy and comprehension levels of the students. I adjust my lessons according to that reading. Overall, I try my best to make the lessons fun and interesting. During class, students will be muted. This helps with the sound quality and for the video to always be on the teacher so everyone can view the steps at all times. If there is a question, the student can always raise their hand and I will unmute the student or type in their question in the chat area. We will have moments during warm-ups and discussions where students will be able to interact. Towards the end of class, they’re welcome to ask questions. *Great option for those that homeschool looking for arts or P.E. option as it fulfills all of the requirements for P.E. standards. Also great for those looking for extra-curricular or weekend activities! *The content in this class is fairly fixed and repeated. There are no requirements or previous experience needed for this class.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We practice balancing and acrobatic exercises. Please have open space approximately 6 X 8 ft on the floor for the learners to move around freely.
I recommend a carpeted area, yoga mat, or gymnastics mats.
*I remind students in class that these moves should only be used when practicing capoeira. Capoeira should not be used to harm another person.
Supply List
Students are asked to wear clothing comfortable to move in. For example joggers, leggings, and t-shirts, etc. Ideally, nothing too baggy as it will be difficult to see the motions. T-shirts should be fitted or tucked into pants to avoid shirts coming up during inversions. NO DRESSES OR SKIRTS. Please keep an easy access water bottle nearby during class. You can count on us taking quick sips in between activities.
