~A picture is worth a thousand words~ In graphic design, this is undoubtedly true, as images are a key component of effective visual communication. In this 2nd semester course, students move beyond the fundamentals of graphic design and learn to create compelling imagery that supports a design concept. Students will work on creating strong compositions by strategically and carefully planning their layouts. We begin our journey by learning about the 2 types of imagery found in graphic design: illustrations and photographs. We will discuss a brief history of each image type, the primary styles, and their purpose within designs. Students will be encouraged to create their own imagery to support weekly design assignments. We will move into discussion of layouts and work on creating strong compositions that communicate ideas effectively and clearly while also being visually appealing. Our class will culminate in a final presentation where each student will practice their public speaking and presentation skills by presenting to the class a final design. Pre-requisite: Graphic Design Visual Communications semester 1 OR Introduction to Graphic Design - all 4 introductory courses. Students will be building on previous learning as well as following the structure of prior classes. It is required that students have completed pre-requisites before enrollment. Our course of study will proceed as follows: Week 1: Introduction & History of Illustration Week 2: The business of Illustration including copyright laws Week 3: Types & Styles of Illustration Week 4: Week 5: Introduction & History of Photography Week 6: Photography Basics, including composition and cropping (Guest Speaker) Week 7: Photo manipulation Week 8: Weeks 9-15: Layouts & Compositions Week 16: Student Final Presentations While I do not teach any specific software in this class, students are invited to use the digital software of their choice. Students who do not have experience with creative software or would like to further their knowledge and experience can join me in any of the design software classes I offer. Please contact me for more information. LOOKING FOR HIGH SCHOOL ART CREDITS? The Graphic Design series is a great way to earn art credits for high school. Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Science from North Carolina State University
I have a Degree in Graphic Design, a Bachelor of Science, and over 20 years of working experience in art and graphic design including being the CEO of Little Daisy Media. I believe that the art of graphic design, or at the very least an appreciation for that art, is something that everyone should practice. Graphic design floods our visual perception everywhere, from the products we buy to the advertisements we are exposed to. I want to share my knowledge of graphic design so that kids understand the basic elements and can build on that to become creative critical thinkers.
