How long is each class? This course happens twice per week. Each session is 30 minutes long. What will students learn in this course? This session supports students in mastering 5th grade math without committing to a full semester. Students can select which classes to attend based on the topics provided. How is this class structured? Each class covers two lessons. I teach this class using a gradual release model: “I do, we do, you do”. -Greetings and Review (5 min) -I do: New instruction (10 min) -We do: Interactive Guided practice (10 min) -You do: Check for understanding ( 5 min) Can I enter this class at any time? Yes! Whether students are being homeschooled or go to school, this class will help learners to master 5th grade math. I struggle in math, can I join this class? Absolutely! Remediating students in math is one of my specialties. About the instructor I come to you with over 15 years of experience in STEM education. I am a certified educator in 6 different States. I hold a Bachelor's Degree of Science with distinguished honors. In addition, I hold a Masters Degree Science Education and Doctorate of Philosophy in Teaching Learning and Culture with a specialization in Science and Mathematics Education. This class is for students who have completed 4th grade math.
Learning Goals
My instructional time will focus on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to 2‐digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume.
