US Grade 4 - 7
Let’s challenge ourselves to a Geography Bee! This class is designed for students to have fun while reviewing Geography facts. This Geography Bee focuses on map skills and related vocabulary. The class will begin with a brief review of 22 map terms such as: compass rose, latitude & longitude, hemisphere, physical and political map. To help students prepare, handouts are attached that include a blank world map and a list of terms (with a definition source) that are covered in our challenge. Students can practice with the handouts to become more competitive, before class begins. Then, students will participate in a Kahoot challenge that offers a choice of four possible answers to each question, along with a picture clue. Kahoot is a fun on-line format that allows students to respond to questions in a quiz show environment. Participants do compete for points, but our focus is on that 'aha' moment when our learners immediately see correct answers and celebrate their new learning. Our Kahoot is constructed exclusively for this class. Geography Bee questions include simple definitions, comparisons of similar terms and application questions requiring higher order thinking. This Geography Bee is designed for students with a basic understanding of world map skills and related vocabulary. Students will see the correct answer to each question immediately after each answer is tallied, allowing them to reinforce correct understanding. After our Bee is completed we will review the more challenging terms as time allows. Students will have approximately four opportunities to work with these map skills and vocabulary, supporting long term memory. Our learners will receive a certificate of accomplishment that recognizes completion of this class and their Kahoot results.
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate mastery of 22 concepts related to map skills by practicing for meaning, reviewing, completing a Kahoot game quiz and then reviewing errors.

Supply List
Handouts are attached to this lesson for our learners to use in preparing for this Kahoot challenge, and to support the class review. Students should have two screens for the kahoot game quiz, if possible. The device normally used for online classes will display the questions and choices through Outschool. A smart phone or tablet will serve as the second device, used as the response controller. Using this second device, learners will sign in to www.kahoot.it, enter the PIN number provided in class and then they are ready to play our Kahoot. If a second device is not available to enter answers, students can participate with a simple paper & pencil, and keep their own tally of results.
